How we make your bed.

At Cocketts Mattresses we use time honoured techniques honed over three generations to produce the exact mattress you require using traditional materials.

We start by constructing the spring unit of the mattress.

This is made to measure according to the size you require and virtually any size can be made, give or take an inch. When constructing the unit, we take into consideration the weights of the people sleeping on the mattress so that the tension of the springs used will give them the proper support.

Next we cover the spring with the first layer of upholstery.

The first layer is a dense material which is attached strongly to the spring unit so that it will not sag into the unit over time. This material can be a polypropylene backed needled flock or the more traditional backed coir (natural coconut fibre).

After the first layer, or insulation pad, we then place various layers of upholstery.

To upholster the mattress we use a large range of fillings including layered flock, needled flock, foam, latex, polyester and wool. We select materials that are appropriate for the individual sleeper according to personal preference and need.

After upholstery we cover the mattress.

The mattress cover is made with high quality materials from our stock of traditional tickings and damasks, according to your choice. Other fabrics can be ordered if required. Using our 1950s Singer tape edge sowing machine we then stitch together the mattress cover - including fully stitched fabric handles.

The mattress is then put into the press and buttoned.

The process of buttoning ensures that the fillings do not move from their correct position. The buttoning also puts the mattress spring under tension thus preventing excessive mattress bounce and helping the mattress support the sleeper more efficiently.
