At Cocketts we make truly orthopedic mattresses. To other firms, orthopedic simply means hard. To Cocketts orthopedic means straight bone or straight back, therefore any mattress can be orthopedic as long as the mattress allows the sleeper to lie in the correct posture for the benefit of the back and lumbar area. (See buying hints for more details of posture support.)

To provide correct support, we design the mattress taking account of the height and weight of the customer. In addition we ask about back ailments and personal preference. We do this to ensure that the mattress will give proper back care.

With this information, we can make a more lightly sprung mattress for a lighter person or a more heavily sprung mattress for a heavier person. If people of differing weights are sharing the same mattress then we will make each half with the spring support suitable for the person sleeping above; this will ensure that no roll together will occur and each person will sleep soundly with the proper spinal posture.

If there are medical or injury problems to the spine, or even mild back ache, we may suggest the inclusion of an extra lumbar support pad in the centre of the mattress. This supports from just below the hips to just below the shoulders. The pad will cushion the hips and coccyx (or tailbone) and support the lumbar region (or small of the back) above the hips; it also gives better support to the shoulder blades.

This cushioning will also help people with sciatica, rheumatoid arthritis and brittle bones. We cannot promise a cure, but we can help alleviate some symptoms of pain. However doctors often overlook the positive health benefits of a properly designed and made bed or mattress.

At Cocketts Mattresses we can also design a mattress to help people with asthma and allergy. As a rule vegetable fibres, such as cotton and coir, break down to dust more quickly than man-made fibres. Therefore, in the design process we can alter the balance of upholstery away from the dusty ones towards the less dusty and make a hypoallergenic mattress. We can also insert a dust resistant cover inside the mattress to prevent dust escape. Another adaption that can be made is the inclusion of anti dust mite upholstery.
