This bedstead is a copy, based on a surviving one dating from approximately 1450. The original can be seen in the Bayleaf building at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum.
It is made of Oak, 3" in thickness. The mattress is supported by ropes - hence the phrase "Sleep Tight".
Horsehair mattresses came into use around 1520 and continued in use until the middle of the 20th century.

This mattress has been hand tufted. It has a stitched edge to maintain shape.
Medieval replica beds can be made copying the range of styles dating from the fourteenth century to the sixteenth.
We will recreate beds that have survived from the period and those illustrated on works of art of the period.
Only three will be made for purchase per year.
